Jericho was formed in 1985 when I, Jerri Gates, and my mother Shirley, obtained our first Pharaoh Hound, Empress. Since then, we have been highly involved in the various activities available for the breed. We have finished numerous show Champions, running many to the various Lure Coursing titles, ranking several in National Standings, raced on the Oval and Straight tracks, and worked in Obedience.
After losing our co-founder, Shirley, in 1996 to Cancer, I decided to join forces with another Pharaoh Hound enthusiast in 1997. Phil Qualls is someone who shares the same ideals and goals as Jericho.
Our "Dual Purpose" motto is the mainstay of our breeding program, striving to maintain "Form AND Function". We believe that our breed should have the capability of doing what they were originally bred to do, whether it be on live game or artificial lure. The goal of Jericho is to successfully combine soundness and elegance while maintaining the coursing and hunting ability of the ancients. In recent years, we have expanded our breeding program to include the best of European, Scandinavian and English lines.
In 1998 we expanded our interests to include the rare breed Cirneco dell'Etna, and in 2004 d'Lea Cirnechi was formed with our close friend Janis Butler. This is an old breed that is fairly new to the US. We have many plans for this breed in the future, and look forward to assisting with its recognition.
In January of 2005, Janis and I saw a face that was completely irresistible. Pamela the Pointer joined our family that weekend. We have since become very intrigued with the breed, and will probably expand our interest in the future.
Unfortunately, in 2007, we lost our d'Lea partner and friend Janis to Cancer. However, we intend to carry on with the plans for the wonderful little Cirneco.
